Best friends Duncan and Ray run a successful bookie business in Phoenix. Outgrowing the life they began in college, the late twenty-something pair set out on the road with a plan to never return. Their trip takes them cross-country with eventful stops in Las Vegas, Omaha, and Niagara Falls. Along their journey they meet several colorful characters and even agree to bring a pretty young girl named Ruby along with them for the ride. Landing in Boston to run an errand for an old friend, the travelers begin to lay roots in an attempt to forge for themselves the life they’d always hoped for. Easier said than done. As romances begin to burgeon, and one of their lives is put in danger, the group quickly discovers that where they are may indeed have little effect on who they are.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
Maintaining sanity.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing?
It equipped me with a useful combination of angst, fear, and guilt, which often leads to honesty, realism, and good humor.
When and why did you begin writing?
I started writing in my late teens, which seems so long ago now that I’ll say the reason was… no Internet?
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
Reading.
When did you first know you could be a writer?
Anyone can be a writer with enough hard work, patience, and practice.
What inspires you to write and why?
The stories in my head.
What genre are you most comfortable writing?
Fiction. My stories tend to blur the lines between sub-genres, but could be considered Contemporary, with a smattering of Literary and New Adult.
What inspired you to write your first book?
Fear of working in an office my whole life.
Who or what influenced your writing once you began?
So many people and things, the list would be too long if I broke it down. The big ones: Books, movies, music, art, personal drive… and my wife.
What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?
Getting my first book published was a challenging process. But I would have to say, beyond that, getting readers to notice you and give you a chance is really, really hard. Publishing a book is just the first step. People have to read it after that. That’s been my biggest challenge.
Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it?
I have a larger appreciation for the skill of self-promotion. I’m simply not very good at it. I don’t know where it overlaps with humility, but I may put too much thought into it. Being my own marketer is a tough grind for me.
Do you intend to make writing a career?
Yes. Yes I do.
Have you developed a specific writing style?
I like to think so! I certainly don’t go into it trying to imitate or duplicate, so if my style isn’t at least somewhat original, I’ve may have channeled some dead folks by accident.
What is your greatest strength as a writer?
Persistence.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?
Loyalty.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?
Loyalty.
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?
I don’t know that I have a favorite, but this one (attributed to many originators) came to mind first. I think it sums up a decent perspective: Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
