When Karen-Anne isn’t writing, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, hiking, and visiting new places. She fuels her addiction of creating new stories by her only other addiction, caffeine, and listening to a myriad of musical genres. you as a person first. What do you do
when you’re not writing?
Hi. Thank you for having me! I love hanging out with my husband and daughter, going to movies, hiking, or just driving around the forest. Getting lost in a great book is another of my favorite pastimes.
When did you start
writing?
I began writing my debut novel, Saving Rain, in September 2012, but first realized that I wanted to become an author one day when I was in college and our class was assigned a short story. I fell in love!
As a published
author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?
When a reader told me how reading Saving Rain helped her get through some difficult times and when another reader finished The Rain Trilogy and decided to do her final college paper on human trafficking. Those moments were unbelievably amazing and humbling to me.
If you could go
anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and
why?
Italy….because it’s freakin’ Italy! I’ve always dreamed of visiting Venice, Tuscany, Pisa, and all the cobblestone streets and beautiful vineyards. I researched Italy for Healing Rain, and I can’t wait until the time comes when I can visit in person.
If you had 4 hours
of extra time today, what would you do?
Sleep, then read. I miss spending time reading; I don’t get to do it nearly as much anymore, but I still squeeze in time.
Where would you
like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?
I love to have different places in my novels. One place I would like to use as a setting in the future is New Zealand. I’ve never been, but it looks like it’s breathtaking.
Back to your
present book, Ash to Steele, how did
you publish it?
I’m a self-published Indie author and I published Ash to Steele through Kindle Direct and Create Space on Amazon.
In writing your
book, did you travel anywhere for research?
Actually, I live very close to where Emma is from in Ash to Steele. I’ve been to Pickens. S.C. a handful of times. As far as Boston, where most of the novel takes place, I’ve only been there once, but I loved it! I wanted to move to Boston when I was younger but never did. So far, I haven’t traveled specifically for my books, but I would love to!
Why was writing Ash to Steele so important to you?
I’m such a sucker for a bad boy with a good heart and Breck Steele is definitely a tattooed, one night stand, I’ll-kick-your-ass-if-you-mess-with-me-or-someone-I-love kind of bad boy, but he has a heart of gold underneath his cocky exterior. He also is dealing with some serious personal demons, especially once he meets Emma.
I can relate to Emma with growing up in a small town myself and experiencing many of the same feelings she struggles with as she tries to find out who she wants to be while finding her more in this life. I wanted to write a love story that is not only sexy, but also shows how the power of love can take two completely opposite people who want to hate each other and heal, redeem, and forge an undeniable bond instead.
Where do you get
your best ideas and why do you think that is?
Everyday life provides an amazing environment to come up with ideas for writing. Even a mundane trip to the grocery store can spark a great scene in a story. Music is also a huge inspiration to me. If I need to get my head in a certain scene, I will put in the type of music that I know will help get my mind where it needs to be. For example, I listened to heavy, darker music while writing the scene where Emma was attacked.
