Guest Post by Nathan Garrison:

Persistence
I’ve heard many famous authors say that a writer just starting out needs to write at least one million words before they can produce anything worth reading. In the same vein, I’ve also heard them say the first book a writer finishes should never be read by anyone else. Makes sense. You’re bound to create some rubble as you’re paving the road towards genius. On my own path to publication, I did something … sort of like that.
You see, while I may have put my million words in, my debut novel, Veiled Empire, was the first book I finished. It was also the first book where I gave up, scrapped everything, and started over from the beginning. And the second book. And the third. You get the idea. While most other first time authors probably write half a dozen different manuscripts before they get one to click, I stuck with the same story. I’m stubborn like that.
Over time, the ideas changed. The world, the plot, and the characters all evolved. My writing got better. A lot better. I’m glad I don’t have access to those early, feeble attempts. “Cringeworthy” doesn’t begin to describe it. So, while I may not have obeyed the letter of the law our most wise sages have laid down, I think I abided by the spirit. If I have any advice to novice writers it’s this: Persistence. Just keep writing. One way or another, as long as you stick with it, you’ll create something you can be proud to show the world.

Nathan Garrison Bio:
I have two great boys and an awesome wife who is way more supportive of my writing efforts than I deserve. I love playing guitar (the louder the better), cooking (the more bacon-y the better), playing board/video/card games with friends and family, and reveling in unadulterated geekery.
Born in 1983, I’ve been writing stories since my dad bought our first family computer. I grew up on tales of the fantastic. From Narnia and Middle-Earth to a galaxy far, far away, I’ve always harbored a love for things only imagination can conjure up. I count it among the greatest joys of my life to be able to share the stories within me.
