THE ROAD NOT TAKEN by Susan Rubin

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN
Susan Rubin
Fantasy/Time Travel

The debut novel from Los Angeles-based playwright and filmmaker Susan Rubin is a trippy fantasy that uses time travel to explore the inner drives of a woman in midlife. In The Road Not Taken, a simple trip to the lipstick counter becomes an opportunity to unravel the mystery of self.

Widowed suddenly at age 50, Deborah is left with plenty of money but no direction to her life. Shedding her suburban housewife life, she moves back to the West Village where she grew up. When she meets a woman who appears to be an identical twin, Deborah discovers the Lost: a group of 100 fully-formed people who were dropped off on Earth as it cooled down and who have lived on the planet as it developed. The Lost show her the myriad dimensions of Spacetime, taking her to ancient Egypt, Weimar Germany, and planets without inhabitants. They reunite her with deceased loved ones. She forms relationships with an Egyptian god and a famous artist through whom she lives new truths and learns who she needs to become to walk the road not taken.

Book Review: The Demolition of Democracy by Ted Bagley

Inside the Book:

Title: The Demolition of Democracy
Author: Ted Bagley
Publisher: XLibrisUS
Genre: Political Science
Format: Ebook/Paperback/Hardcover

This work is a synopsis of how I, from my research, feel that this current administration and its behavior, policies, and attack on the democratic foundation of the country could be the undoing of the US as we know it today.

Purchase Here

My Review:
An interesting look at our current government and what is and isn't wrong according to the author. These are some weird and trying times and I enjoyed reading what his thoughts were on Trump and his administration and followers. I am not usually too political, but have found that in the current state our country is in, you almost don't have a choice. And whether you are Democrat, Republican or Independent, you might find something you didn't know about before after reading this.

Meet the Author:
The author is writing his fourth novel ,The Demolition of Democracy, to give substance to what he sees as a threat to the stability of our country by the current Trump administration.

You cried with Hachiko. You got spooked and then laughed it off with Scooby Doo. And you fell in love with John Grogan's incorrigible Marley. But you have yet to meet a dog quite like Super Bu .

After years of arguments on the matter, the Bera family has finally decided to bring home a dog.

Ajay has wanted a dog since he was a child. He has fantasized about every version of his future life around them.

His brother, Arun, would love to get a dog as much but doesn't mind not having to clean up after one.

Ajit, their father, also wants to get a dog. He just wants to feel the love of a dog again, like he used to when he was a child.

Barnali, Ajit's wife, loathes the idea of having a dog in the house. She spent her childhood praying for only one thing, that she shouldn't get married into a family that has dogs. And until now, she got her wish.

But now, Ajay has finally worn out his mother's resilience and the Beras are bringing home a dog. Can this be just the homecoming that the dog or the family had anticipated?

Read now and find out.

Excerpt

“So, what breed is it?” Mohit, who once had a border collie of his own, was curious and waiting to start drawing parallels from his days with his own dog.

“A dachshund,” Arun replied.

“Oh, that tiny sausage-like dog?” Ajanta burst into a bout of laughter as she asked the question. None of the Beras joined in on her laughter so she let it fizzle out quickly.

“A small dog is actually better for a family that mostly stays indoors,” said Arun.

“Dachshunds can be very irritating, dumb dogs. They keep barking at everyone for no reason,” Mohit added.

“Not at all. I had a dachshund, growing up. I also had a German Shepherd. That dachshund was the most intelligent dog that I have ever seen in my life.” Ajit had been very vocal about that when he pushed Ajay to get a dachshund instead of a German Shepherd as well.

Ajay also decided to participate in the conversation, for a change. “Dachshunds are also tremendously vigilant guard dogs. And they have amazing energy.”

“Maybe, but it has almost no fur. Their skin looks like that of a mongrel on the street,” Ajanta added with twitched, judgmental eyebrows and her characteristic, sarcastic grin. Barnali chimed in as she brought out the now prepared tea and placed the tray on the table, “Actually, if you touch the coat it is extremely smooth and silky. I wish I had hair that silky!”

“Alright, alright! Your dachshund is the most pretty and most intelligent dog in the world,” the conceit in Mohit’s voice was hard to conceal, “but why are you keeping it in hiding? You don’t want us to see it?”

“She has been petrified since yesterday and has not stopped shaking since she arrived. I suppose she is yet to get acclimatized in her new environment. Perhaps also dealing with a bit of separation anxiety after being taken from her mother.” Ajit had evidently been thinking about Bu all morning.

“I’ll go and get her,” said Ajay, and headed back to his grandmother’s room once again. It was a good ten minutes before he came back holding Bu in his arms. The light was brighter in the living room and it accentuated all the ribs that her skin was barely draping.

“She looks like she is dying,” Mohit exclaimed.

There was something that lurked in the dark; whenever the team members moved around, performing miracles, healing and assisting other brothers in preaching, they could sense a sidelong, fading look mingled in the shadows of the crowds.

The team seemed not to think about it, since it was so subtle, they didn’t even bother paying attention to it, not after defeating gigantic evil leaders, impressive commanders, and conquering the Five Cities.

Pastor Good knew it was a big call to set up a church in each town, as he was instructed. “But Lord, how am I supposed to set up five churches when the people don’t even understand your Word?” The Pastor thought. Somehow, he knew he just needed to complete the tasks assigned to him and the Lord would see the rest through. After all, he was not alone. The Team Warriors and The Missioners were with him. But above all, his greatest ally was God Almighty.

FIVE MINUTES, MR. BYNER! by John Byner with Douglas Wellman

FIVE MINUTES, MR. BYNER! A LIFETIME OF LAUGHTER
John Byner (with Douglas Wellman)
Celebrity Memoir

Veteran entertainer John Byner, a man of many voices and characters, from impersonating the slow, rolling gait and speech of John Wayne, to lending his voice to The Ant and the Aardvark cartoons has penned (with Douglas Wellman) his biography FIVE MINUTES, MR. BYNER! published by Boutique of Quality Books. His dead-on impersonations, as well as his unique talents as a character actor, have put him on the small screen in peoples' homes, the big screen in theaters, and no screen on Broadway.

“. . . John has had a remarkable career spanning decades, from doing comedy in small clubs in Greenwich Village to The Ed Sullivan Show. . . Ed loved him. . . to The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, to Steve Allen, who basically invented the talk show, to The Carol Burnett Show, to just about every major variety show or situation comedy there was on the air, to hosting his own variety show and introducing Bob Einstein as Super Dave Osborne, and on and on. . . . And he’s still going strong, as funny and as kind as ever.” – Nathan Lane

Growing up in a big family on Long Island, John discovered his uncanny ability to mimic voices as a child when he returned home from a Bing Crosby movie and repeated Bing’s performance for his family in their living room. He discovered his talent made him the focus of everyone’s attention, and allowed him to make friends wherever he went, from elementary school to the U.S. Navy. John started his career in nightclubs in New York, but soon found himself getting national acclaim on The Ed Sullivan Show. With that he was on his way. This memoir is the best and funniest moments of his life, career, and relationships with some of the biggest names in entertainment, both on and
off the screen. “I thought of doing a memoir a year before I began writing it. My friend (co-author), Doug Wellman, suggested years before that if I wanted to write a book he would assist me,” remarked Mr.Byner.

Some people call it fate; others call it luck. Whatever you call it, you've probably been somewhere by chance at exactly the right moment and ended up getting a welcome surprise. I had one of those moments early in my career and it changed my life.
My ability to mimic voices opened up some special opportunities for me. Initially it was just a hobby. I entertained family members, school mates, buddies in the navy, and my coworkers in a myriad of blue-collar jobs, and one white-collar one. I had no idea my future would be in the spotlight in night clubs, television, cartoons, movies, variety shows, and a host of other exciting places. And maybe it wouldn't have been except for fate, luck, or whatever you want to call it. My world opened up one night because I happened to be on a little stage in New York at just the right moment. It was an unplanned event. Had it not occurred, I don't know where I'd be today.

John Byner’s TV career break happened in New York City on Merv Griffin’s Talent Scouts Show in 1964. After great exposure on both Gary Moore and Steve Allen’s variety shows in 1966 and 1967, he clowned around on Ed Sullivan’s showcase program over two dozen times and Johnny Carson’s late-night haunt over three dozen times.

He has lent his vocal library of voices to hundreds of cartoons and animated films. To find out more about John and his book, visit http://johnbyner.com.

Douglas Wellman was born in Minneapolis but moved to Los Angeles where he became a television producer-director for 35 years, as well as the assistant dean of the film school at the University of Southern California. He currently lives in Southern Utah with his wife, Deborah, where he works as a chaplain at a local hospital when not busy writing books.

Book Review: Design Process by Mauro Moro

Title: Design Process
Author: Maura Moro
Publisher: PartridgeSingapore
Genre: Reference/General
Format: Ebook
My design process is not only a handbook full of useful tools and kits. It is also an act of love to design. It is a prayer for design to get back to its glory days when it made sense. It is an appeal to the younger designers! Don’t surrender to the status quo who wants you just as worker ants! Don’t lose your inner voice and your passion for design! Don’t get comfortable in the prevailing conformism! Ask! Seek! Find! Discover new ways, never settle against the pre-cooked solutions, predictable patterns and pre-set goals! Go beyond! Make the impossible!

I have to admit this book was a little above my head. I am not a designer by trade but do love learning all I can. The author does an excellent job of explaining the different elements and how to use them in a traditional or non-traditional way. Don't settle for boring, and expand your thinking. By doing that you will be able to achieve all your dreams and more.

Excerpt

The lazy young lad who would sleep through a freaking earthquake suddenly didn’t need anyone to wake him up. It was a special Sunday morning in September.

Ajay was up at five in the morning. Not once did he hit the snooze button on the alarm clock. He did not sleep through the ringing alarm until someone else in the house got perturbed enough to shake him awake. He heard the alarm within the first few seconds of it going off. He woke up and switched off the alarm, so as not to wake the rest of the family. He did not lie back down over the scattered sheets on his bed like he usually would on any other day.

He got up, headed to the bathroom, freshened up, brushed his teeth, came back out, changed into an ironed, royal blue t-shirt and his grey jeans, and he sat down on the edge of the bed, yet to be made, posture annoyingly better than how he usually sat, and waited. He did not have to get up that early; there wasn’t an exam to get to, no lectures at college that he feared he would be arriving late for, no potential girlfriend who had invited him to meet somewhere for a breakfast date.

It was a Sunday, but Ajay was ready and all dressed up to hit the city by 5:30 in the morning. Yet, this was only the second most unusual thing about this day, because this was also the day that the Bera family had finally agreed to bring home a dog.
