ABOUT ROOM OF TEARS

At 9:59 a.m. on September 11, 2001, Diane O’Connor’s life as a firefighter’s wife changes forever, shattering her faith. Four decades later, a note still hangs on her kitchen cabinet in Queens, the paper yellowed with age. Diane knows the scribbled sentences by heart; she’d left them the morning of 9/11 for her husband, Billy. In the summer of 2041, Diane invites Friar Antonio Ortiz to her home. He is a man destined to become counsel to the first American pope – her son, Peter. Antonio asks no questions and arrives in secret, promising to wait nineteen years before passing Diane’s journal to Peter. Only then will Billy’s story be told, along with answers to Peter’s questions about his father’s last days.

My Review

When I found out that this book was about 9/11 I jumped at the opportunity to review it.  But, I was pleasantly surprised by a book that did feature 9/11, but was about so much more. This book has many different elements to appeal to all readers, paranormal, suspense, faith, time travel...what more could you ask for?

In 2041, Diane O'Connor makes a special request of Friar Antonio Ortiz - a request whose mystery will unravel as the story unfolds. She hands him a letter and a recording, one that was made right after the 9/11 tragedy.  Diane's believes that her son, Peter, is destined to become the Pope. The Friar is to hold the items until Peter is ready to rise to become the Pope.  While at her house, Diane spins a tale, a mystery that will leave you hanging throughout the entire book.

The flow of the story is one of the best I've read. Diane lost her husband, a firefighter, during the 9/11 attack. You relive her account and the letter and recording, along with diary entries - transported back to the past in a way that is extremely well written. I have read two of Merlino's other books, but I think this might be her best yet. This book is extremely creative and will appeal to many.
