What are you
most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
I’m most
proud of raising a happy, well-adjusted daughter. She is unafraid of trying new
things and always daring to dream big. Her faith in me and my dream to one day publish
a book has been a guiding force in my life
How has your
upbringing influenced your writing?
My father
was a very creative man who worked as an architectural engineer, but his
passion was art and educating himself. If he wanted to learn something new, he
just did it. I think I was heavily influenced by his willingness to take on a
challenge when I was growing up.
When and why
did you begin writing?
I’ve always
been a writer at heart, but I wasn’t able to pursue my dream until after I
became a mother. The first few years were very hectic with raising a toddler
and sending her to school, volunteering in the classroom, and generally
ferrying her to all her activities. But when she was in the fourth grade, my
husband AKA the Physicist challenged me to dust off my writing goals again. I
did and here I am nine years later after loads of writing (and laundry) with
the dream finally realized. I’m glad he challenged me. And I’m grateful that I
could set the example that hard work and persistence pays off for my daughter.
Do you
recall how your interest in writing originated?
I’ve got a
very active imagination and I fed it with the thousands of books I’ve read over
the years. Reading and writing are intertwined deep in my soul. Books were my
escape when I was a young, nerdy girl growing up in a mining town where I just
didn’t fit in. Writing gave me a way to channel my thoughts and ideas and,
quite frankly, my pain and frustration about being the odd ball out.
When did you
first know you could be a writer?
I think I always had thought of myself as a writer, but the idea
that I could one day be a published author didn’t really gel for me until I
attended my first RWA National Conference in 2009. Eloisa James was the keynote
speaker that year and I was moved to tears. For the first time I felt like
maybe this dream of mine wasn’t so crazy and that I could attain it with hard
work and persistence.
What
inspires you to write and why?
I’m inspired
by people and their lives and about how to bring happiness into the world.
There’s a part of me that wants to take whatever is bad out there and make it
better. So my stories are about people who know what it’s like to love and lose
and hurt and feel pain, but in the end they find a way to find the happily ever
after they deserve. That’s why I love writing romances. They are empowering and
positive.
What genre
are you most comfortable writing?
I love
writing sensual contemporary romances set all over the world and in small town
USA. Alpha heroes with big hearts and feisty heroines who expect their heroes
to work hard to win their hearts are the stories I enjoy writing.
What
inspired you to write your first book?
The first
book I wrote was inspired by a challenge from my husband AKA the Physicist.
He’s the reason I took out a compact disk and wrote my first novel. I had to
prove to him that I did have what it took to write a full length story. And I
did. Not only that, I’ve written many more books since that first one.
Who or what
influenced your writing once you began?
I’ve been
influenced by many mentors and writing teachers throughout the years. Donald
Maass’s Writing the Breakout Novel and
James Scott Bell’s The Art of War for
Writers are my go-to books when I need motivation. I’ve also had many
courses with Margie Lawson. Her deep editing techniques have forced me to
stretch as a writer. Finally, the published authors who have reached out to me
and guided me as I’ve pursued this career have been beyond generous. I plan to
pay it forward every day.
What do you
consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in
general?
The most
challenging for me about writing a novel is getting the first draft written.
I’m a reviser by nature and it is in the revision process that my novels gain
depth. Right now I’m working on multiple projects for Entangled Publishing and
that makes writing my new first draft more difficult. However, this is a great
problem to have because I’ve sold my first book and that’s a dream come true!
I’m readjusting how I am approaching the first draft of the sequel as I undergo
this metamorphosis from unpublished to first sale to being published. It’s a
wonderful challenge to face.
Did writing
this book teach you anything and what was it?
I had to
open a lot of veins and rip my heart to shreds for this book. Strengthening the
emotional depth in my writing meant tapping deeper parts about myself. But I
learned that if I am brutally honest with myself, then I am able to translate
that honesty onto the page. It’s hard work. But it’s worth the effort in the
end.
Do you
intend to make writing a career?
I absolutely
intend to make writing my career. I treated it like one long before I got the
fabulous email from my editor at Entangled Publishing. There are so many stories inside my head that
I want to write. Plus, I’ve got other stories that I’m revising because I love
them and I hope that they will reach readers’ hearts as well.
Have you
developed a specific writing style?
I start with
the idea and the characters, then I tackle the story’s emotional turning points
for the hero and the heroine. If I know what is driving my characters
internally, then I can put them anywhere. I generally do a quick first draft,
then revise like crazy.
What is your greatest strength as a
writer?
I’m
self-disciplined. There isn’t a muse in my world that flits in and out at her
leisure. There are days that I have no idea about what I am going to write—the
characters are taking a nap or vacationing on a mental cruise ship to parts
unknown. But that doesn’t stop me from sitting down to write. I have a flexible
schedule, but most days I set my timer for one hour writing runs until I wrap
up my four hour commitment. I may only get a few words per hour on bad days,
but on good days… well that’s when the fun begins. The trick for me is to stay
with the characters and in the story six days a week.
What is your
favorite quality about yourself?
I am a
gregarious, empathetic person who wants everyone to attain the dreams they spin
in their heads.
What is your
least favorite quality about yourself?
I’m
impatient. Yet I’m part of an industry that can move very slowly. I’ve often
compared it to a snake swallowing an elephant.
I’m very patient in my communications with people, but I loathe waiting
for responses. Of course, I’m tethered to my computer all day so it’s easy for
me to react quickly.
What is your
favorite quote, by whom, and why?
I have this
Donald Maass quote taped to my office closet door because the story is the most
important thing to focus on—before I sold and after I sold: “I hope that your
measure of success will not be the gratification of getting an agent or seeing
your name on the cover, but putting together a novel of real depth—of having
something to say and saying it in a story with lasting power.”
