Book Blast: Life-Changing ABC Scriptures with Stories by Katherine Dye

Inside the Book:

life-changing-abc-scriptures

Title: Life-Changing ABC Scriptures with Stories
Author: Katherine Dye
Publisher: iUniverse
Genre: Religion/Spirituality
Format: Ebook

Life Changing— In the beautiful collection of fictional southern style short stories, set in her hometown, Katherine Dye highlights many nooks and crannies of New Albany, Mississippi, and if you are a native, you will delight in reading about the places you often see. If not … well, you will want to visit this lovely little artisan town and see for yourself the wonders of the pleasant and less complex southern way of life as depicted in Katherine's stories, paintings, and sketches.

The beauty of her short stories is their attraction to the Word of God. Katherine, from a child, was encouraged to memorize scripture verses; and those that became a “lamp unto her feet and a light unto her path” are the ones she has cleverly included. There is a verse for each letter of the alphabet, and she makes clear the need for a two-way conversation between God and his children, the grand and glorious balance of prayer and reading of the scriptures.

The stories are designed for young teens, but if you are a bit older now, you may find yourself slipping back to childhood and teenage years, reminiscent of the days of The Old South. Many of the scriptures Katherine features are those we memorized as children.

We are never too old to learn, but as Katherine explains in the story of Grandy and Jamie, it is much easier when we are youthful and our minds are clear and sharp, unencumbered by years of living and working and loving and playing. It feels good to slip back to those times when our ability to memorize was heightened by virtue of our youth, and the verses we so cherish are those we best remember from childhood.

This collection of stories is timeless. Read and relish youthful thoughts.

Meet the Author:

Katherine Dye was born in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, during the Great Depression. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Art and English from Blue Mountain College and a Master's Degree in Art Education from the University of Mississippi in Oxford. She taught art and remedial reading for many years in the New Albany school system. Katherine is a gifted artist, having illustrated three published children's books. Her art is prominently displayed in her hometown of New Albany where she has lived for many years. In 1979 and ‘80, after researching and mastering the history of her town, Katherine sketched or painted and signed limited edititon prints of the two historical depots, the grand old courthouse, the birthplace of William Faulkner, and other local points of interest. She is affectionately known as “The New Albany Historian.”

Her fictional characters, Grandy and Jamie, are examples of those hometown people who believe it will be an adventure, even an experiment, as Jamie says, “to hold Jesus' hand to see where he might take us next. From my youthful experience, I've concluded that God's way is the best way!”

This is a small book of poetry. It was written while the author was close to death from Lupus. Why, then, does pain inspire, and inspiration produce fruits to uplift and comfort. God only knows. But there is knowing here and insights only the heart knows through suffering. If you are suffering, or know someone who is, you may find these poems a salve and solution to why good people have to suffer. For, as the author once said, "The question is not why bad things happen to good people, but why good things happen to bad people; namely, why did Jesus came for me?"

Book Excerpt:

From: Adam Wolf
To: Paul Bishop
October 12, 2014 4:54 pm
Subject: Finally saw Sarah, virtually
Oh Paul — “L’avventura” continues. No pauses for breath or thought. Since the last email, this thing with Sarah has detonated. We are now writing each other all day, every day, sometimes at night, on the way to work, at work, lunch, at intersections, on the back porch. I spend my days longing for her messages and panic when an hour goes by without. No more tentative phrases and innuendo. No more stuff about vague ambiguous longing. It’s full blown, Paul. Jesus H — it’s sweet passion and sexy -particularly exciting because we never had the chance in our first go-round way back when.
The day came. We decided it was the right time to finally see each other — to Skype. I was in Cleveland, alone. Sarah picked a time when I would call. I brought three changes of clothes and tried each of them on before we Skyped — stood back from the mirror and rejected them all. I finally settled on a button-down light blue shirt with one of those newfangled small-ish collars, and a dark blue crew neck. (I remembered that Sarah doesn’t like V-necks.) The pants, Izod chinos with the pleated front and room to grow. I was now prepared with my best Belmondo charm to woo Sarah into bed.
It wasn’t like that, though. I don’t know what it was, Paul. Maybe it was modesty, perhaps fear about what we must look like now to people who last saw us when we were young. The mask of age. Anyway, whatever it was, when the time came we both sat in the shadows in our respective rooms and just peered at the camera. First there was giggling over nothing. Eventually, I decided to thrust my face forward into the light, regardless of the consequences. Sarah leaned forward herself for a moment, her hand over her face, just briefly let her eyes show and stared at me nervously. Later she said she thought me so handsome still. I told her I would recognize those beautiful baby blues anywhere, if only she would let me see them clearly.
I couldn’t really see her face. The light was arranged so only a silhouette was visible. For a while she resembled someone being interviewed in the witness protection program. I expected her voice to sound shrill and electronic. “I foist met Vinnie da Butcher Bugliosi in 1946 at a pizza parlor in Passaic. He showed me a good time. His last words to me were ‘keep your mouth shut’.”
As for the rest of her, I conjured up the worst — telling myself I will love her no matter what. I had visions of Sarah Ross now — cauliflower ears and 7 teeth, four of which dangled precipitously. I feared her neck would show signs of some old rope burns from 10 years ago, when she tried to hang herself in the mental ward.
When Sarah finally spoke, her voice was soft. Softer than I remembered, sweet, more confident, deeper. At first she spoke out of the darkness. She said, “It’s you. It’s really you.” The conversation deteriorated from there. And I said, “It’s you, really you,” but I wasn’t sure. Except for the voice it could have been Golda Meier there, for all I knew. When she finally leaned into the light, I must have lost my breath. I saw her — and despite the few wrinkles, the face more set in place, she was immediately my girl, her smile now even sweeter. Her gestures were more refined and confident. She was dressed elegantly for me — a silky salmon top and a paisley shawl. The years dissolved, and the fears about age were gone. My Sarah and she beamed at me.    We talked softly, nothing sexually charged about it, just soft remembrance. We imagined that we were back in her sunroom, with the low red love seat — tamely making out — her hand caressing my belly but- ton, just under the belt — how we slept together at 15, quite literally, in that hot room, napping together in the heat — or about her head on my lap when we watched The Twilight Zone Friday nights — or the path we took through Cain Park when I carried home her books after school — or the people we routinely met along my paper route.    At some point, Paul, we stopped talking and simultaneously touched our fingers to our lips and reached toward the screen.

MEET THE AUTHOR

cheryl-ann-smith

A fan of romance fiction since the dark ages, author Cheryl Ann Smith loves to throw her heroines into danger, just to see what they’ll do. Her dream of publication came true in 2011 when the first in her historical romance series came out with Berkley Sensation. And starting on September 13th 2016, she’ll launch an exciting a new contemporary romance series with Kensington’s Lyrical Press. These books will mix her crazy sense of humor with the adventures of a trio of female private investigators, who are the kick-ass heroines Cheryl has always wanted to be.

While growing up, Cheryl never dreamed of being a writer. Then one afternoon she got a crazy idea and decided to write her own book. It took over five years, a marriage, and the births of her children to finish the manuscript. It was a hundred pages too long and thin on plot, but she took immense satisfaction in her accomplishment.

Naively, she was sure that book would sell to great fanfare. Agents and editors were less than enthusiastic. Thankfully, she stumbled onto Romance Writers of America soon after and that book got filed away forever. Since then her plots have improved and her page counts and writing time per book have been cut considerably. Cheryl lives in Michigan with her family, two cats and a very hairy dog. She enjoys outdoor adventures and traveling, when she has the time, and hopes to make her first visits to Europe and Australia in the very near future.

About the Author

Subhash and Sujata hail from India. They migrated to the United States along with their memories of childhood and youth. Now that they are parents, just like every immigrant they crave to introduce their child to the culture and values of their upbringing. Yet it is challenging to teach something while you are in the midst of adjusting to a different culture yourself.
Subhash and Sujata both work in different disciplines and have different styles and backgrounds, but it is the upbringing of their son that brings them on the same page. That exact place where they meet is captured and reflected in their stories, where Subhash can express in words, and Sujata can illustrate them beautifully. Where he puts it in black and white, she adds color to it. You get the idea!
These stories are their attempt to share a glimpse of their childhood days with their son. He is their inspiration to write short stories that have meaning to them and provide teaching in some shape or form.

Davin Whitehurst lives in the beautiful high desert of Southern Arizona with his wife and son. He is releasing his first book "I have Faith" in May of 2016 but has so many more that are in the making. The motivation behind the books are deeply rooted from in his own past. He is a living testimony of Proverbs 22:6. Growing up in Southwest Kansas and in a Christian household, he was trained up in the way he should go. By the time he became a teenager, Davin turned away from God and left church. Fast forward into his late twenties and God brought him back with a powerful calling. He and his family have been faithfully serving at Seed of Abraham Christian Center International for over seven years now. Proof that when we teach our children the way they should go. When they get older, they know where to turn and will not depart from God. Davin wants each book written to be a resource that parents have to help train their children in the way they should go. He writes stories in a simple way that will be fun and practical for every child. He wants children to get excited about faith and the things of God.

His latest release is the children’s book, I Have Faith.

Are you ready to get your child excited about faith? “I Have Faith” puts your child right in the footsteps of Danny as he begins to learn about faith. Danny and his older brother have been wanting a dog, but both know their parents don’t think they are ready for a dog. When Danny’s mom begins teaching him what the bible says about faith, he puts his faith into action. After praying and releasing his faith for a dog, doubt and even his best friend keep telling him that he will never get a dog. Over time Danny never loses his faith in the promises of God and finds that God is faithful and that faith works. Come along on this journey that is a real life event that took place in the author’s life as a child.
This book has great illustrations that support a wonderful story about finding faith in God. As you are teaching your child about principals in the bible; this book will help you teach faith. What a wonderful experience it is when we can see our children begin to develop their faith in God, and grow from a tiny mustard seed to a firmly planted tree. The back of the book has a parent/child discussion which will help children gain understanding in faith and some scriptures that Danny’s mom used to get him excited about faith.

For More Information

Thank you for this interview!  I’d like to know more about you as a person first.  What do you do when you’re not writing?

I am an independent contractor for multiple government agencies and that’s all I can really say about that. I also started my own publishing company this year called Childlike Faith Publishing. That has become almost a full time job or at least I treat it that way.

I love music and have been in the music industry since I was sixteen years old. I love producing and writing music but have taken a little time off from that because of the book.

I spend the rest of my time with my wife and son playing basketball and enjoying the beautiful landscape of Southern Arizona. Studying my bible and spending time with God along with going up to the mountains and hiking are some of my favorite things to do.

When did you start writing?

I have always been a dreamer and a creative person, but about 8 years ago I began to get book ideas. It was not until a little over a year ago now that I finally started to finish my first book and really step into my calling to be a writer.

As a published author, what would you say was the most pivotal point of your writing life?

Getting a story completed instead of just an idea in my head. I always write things down: ideas, stories, and life in general. I just never started writing any of these things and creating them into finished works. One day I was sitting in a car with a co-worker and he showed me a painting his wife had just finished. I had just come to the realization a short time earlier that I needed to finish I Have Faith. That was the point that I knew I found my illustrator. That was the moment writing and illustration came together to finish my first book.

If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?

I would go to a secluded beach somewhere. I love the calming sounds of the ocean and the peaceful setting of the beach. To me it would be an ideal place to write a book. I don’t know though, that may just be a fantasy.

If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?

I would spend it with my family. My wife and I get very busy with our work and starting our own businesses so sometimes we are apart a lot. It would give us some time to go hiking and get some good family time in.

Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?

Ancient Japan, as it can be such a mystical setting and can have action and magical characters. The architecture and environment is beautiful and I think it adds some intrigue to a story. But the culture is what gets me. I think being able to bring that out in a story would be fun.

Back to your present book, I Have Faith, how did you publish it?

I Have Faith is published under my own publishing company. I looked at submitting to publishers but decided not to. I thought I had waited long enough to get this story out and I could get it done myself. I also looked into vanity press solutions. Not to knock any of them but I knew I could get the book done in excellence and none of the other companies matched the spirit of excellence I was looking for. I am business minded though, so it just made sense for me to do it myself.

In writing your book, did you travel anywhere for research?

I traveled back in time. This story is based from a time in my childhood where I wanted a dog. I had asked God for a dog about a month before Christmas thinking I was going to get it for Christmas. My mom didn’t want us to have a dog, but I thought I was ready for one. Months and months later I got my dog. God had reminded me of this one day and told me to write a book on faith.

Why was writing I Have Faith so important to you?

Faith is such a vital and misused virtue in life now days. God created the earth by faith and gave us a model to follow for our own lives. Teaching children how to trust in God and live by faith gives them a strong foundation to grow up on. Giving them that strong foundation with help through this book is what makes it so special to me. That is also why I wrote the parent/child discussion in the back. It brings both parent and child together in a learning environment where faith can be taught.

Where do you get your best ideas and why do you think that is?

Almost every book idea I have has come from a dream or a vision God has placed in me. I am working on a book series now that came from one of the most vivid dreams I have ever had to date. It is an action young adult novel. My son had a dream about this other world and as he was describing it I was writing it down and as he finished I was amazed at the story potential. This will be another book I start to write. I am not for sure why I get these ideas but God told me to write it down. So a lot of my life is written down.

Any final words?

Go after your calling. Don’t back down and don’t be afraid. Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on water. Yes, he began to sink and Jesus had to rescue him. But the other eleven stayed in the boat and never were able to tell that story like Peter did. Get out of the boat. Live your life to the fullest. Begin to take the limits off your life. Become a doer!
