Fiction writer Deven Greene lives in the San Francisco Bay area. Ever since childhood, Deven has been interested in science. After receiving a doctorate in biochemistry, she went to medical school and trained as a pathologist. She worked for several decades in that field before starting to write fiction. Deven incorporates elements of medicine or science in most of her writing. She has published several short stories. Her debut novel, Unnatural, is the first book of the Erica Rosen MD Trilogy, and was released in January 2021. Unwitting, released in October 2021, is the second Erica Rosen MD novel. I’d like to know more about you as a person first. What do you do when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, I’m often thinking about refining the plot of my work in progress or coming up with ideas for my next novel or short story.
When did you start taking writing seriously?
About ten years ago, I wrote my first novel. Although I haven’t published that one yet, I’d like to publish it after I finish the novel I’m working on now. The trouble is, I’ll probably have another idea for a book by the time I finish this one, resulting in delaying the publication of my first novel even more.
If you could go anywhere in the world to start writing your next book, where would that be and why?
I wouldn’t go far. Ideally, I’d find a comfortable, quiet place nearby where NO ONE WOULD BOTHER ME during my writing time.
If you had 4 hours of extra time today, what would you do?
Hard to say. Maybe I’d take up the piano again. I played years ago but have pretty much forgotten how to play. I might enjoy taking lessons again, but I’d need extra time every day.
Where would you like to set a story that you haven’t done yet?
I have no burning desire to set a story in any particular place. The story dictates the setting. All things being equal, if I don’t want to do extensive research on an area, I will choose a place I’m familiar with.
Why was writing your trilogy so important to you?
I started with the protagonist, Erica Rosen, in mind. At that time, I had ideas for the first two books. I didn’t want to start a series, so I decided on a trilogy. It didn’t take me long to come up with the plot for the third book.
Any final words?
I’m curious and enjoy the research I need to do to
prepare for my writing. I hope my readers are curious, too, because
there’s a good chance they’ll learn some interesting things from reading
my novels.
